God is All-Powerful
Teaching Series: Remember God
God is all-powerful. This is not about brute force and strength. This is about God’s power and authority. He is God Almighty, El Shaddai. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the sovereign King. God has absolute authority over all. Because God is Almighty, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
God’s power and authority is seen in his power to create. In Genesis, God’s power is so unlimited that he only had to speak, and he could create out of nothing. In Psalm 139, the focus of God’s power is the marvelous development of a baby in the mother’s womb.
Certainly you made my mind and heart; you wove me together in my mother’s womb. I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing. You knew me thoroughly; my bones were not hidden from you, when I was made in secret and sewed together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb. All the days ordained for me were recorded in your scroll before one of them came into existence. How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God! How vast is their sum total! If I tried to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Even if I finished counting them, I would still have to contend with you. (Psalm 139:13-18)
But God’s power and authority extends even before our life in the womb. God said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I chose you. Before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5).
Not only does God create; he sustains us all our days. “He sustains all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3). “For all things in heaven and on earth were created by him – all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers – all things were created through him and for him. He himself is before all things and all things are held together in him” (Colossians 1:16-17).
Caution: God has extreme power. He cannot be stopped.
If God is all-powerful, one thing is for sure – no one who resists him can succeed. It may seem like for a while that you succeed. But it is foolish and stupid to disobey God Almighty. He cannot be tricked, conned or defeated. And he has appointed a day of judgment, because he is God Almighty (Revelation 19:15). You can ignore God’s power and authority, but you cannot avoid it. So stop rebelling and resisting God. He has all authority over your life.
Comfort: God is mighty to save.
The same God who created the universe is available to you. There is nothing that can hinder his plans. Nothing! No matter what you face, there is nothing that can withstand his power. “You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Now to him who by the power that is working within us is able to do far beyond all that we ask or think, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Memory Verse: Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
